The main hall of Zenkoji Temple (National
Treasure)
Since Zenkoji is not affiliated with any one particular sect of Buddhism, it has
been popular among a great number of people throughout its history.
The precincts of the temple feature the main hall (National Treasure), the main
gate (Important Cultural Property), the belfry and the Roku-Jizo or the images
of six Ksitigarbha bodhisattvas. |

It is a thirty minute walk
from Nagano Station to Zenkoji.
The front approach to the main hall of the temple is paved with flagstones, allegedly
7,777. The stores lining the front approach, showcase a wide variety of gifts
and local products such as family Buddhist alters, pickled vegetables and traditional
toys. |

Chochin
Chochin, or paper lanterns, were originally hung from the eaves of buildings or
carried to light the way.
A candle is set inside the frame, a structure of bamboo hoops covered with tough
paper. Today they are popular as souvenirs. |
