Matsushiro has many places of historical interest including samurai residences and Buddhist temples.

Matsushiro originally developed as a castle town which served as the base of the Sanada family. The family ruled Matsushiro for 250 years until the end of the Edo period.
This historic town retains many cultural assets such as samurai residences and Buddhist temples.

Sanada Tei (Sanada Residence)
Sanada Tei is a samurai residence of the Sanada family built on a site of approximately 7,000 square meters. It is also famous for its beautiful garden which Changes with the seasons.

Chokokuji Temple @
As the temple of the Sanada family, Chokokuji has the mausoleum of Sanada Nobuyuki, the first lord of the family, called "Mitamaya" which has been designated an Important Cultural Property. The highlights of the mausoleum include carved cranes and paintings on the latticed ceiling. @

KAWANAKAJIMA
During the Warring States period in the mid-fifteenth century, two prominent landholding military lords, Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen, and their armies fought five times, mainly in Kawanakajima.

Historic Battlefield

Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen fought in Kawanakajima five times between 1553 and 1564. Hachimanbara Historical Park was built in the place where Takeda Shingen had his main military base. The park has a statue depicting a famous episode between the two lords in which Shingen stops Kenshin's sword with his fan.
Enma, the King of Hell, in Tenkyuji Temple
Tenkyuji was built to hold services for the souls of people killed in the Kawanakajima battles.
This Buddhist temple has Japan's tallest image (five meters) of the Great King Yama.
