Spring

This season allows you to feel the breath of nature after a harsh winter,with cherry blossoms(Japan's national flower),skunk cabbages in Kinasa Village,fresh greenery in mountains and other graces of nature.
March
Hina Doll Festival in Matsushiro
During the season of the girls' festival on the third of March, Matsushiro Town organizes the hina doll festival called “Hina Matsuri,” displaying hina dolls at 90 places throughout the town.
During the festival,many events are scheduled,such as “Nagashi-bina” (when hina dolls dedicated to deities are thrown into rivers),classes on how to make small hina dolls with clothes,and walking events to look around at the dolls displayed as well as the streetscapes in Matsushiro Town.
THE BESO
“Beso,” a Togakushi dialect,means having too good a time beyond yourself through parties,drinking and having fun.
At the festival where sake and wine are served,the traditional local drum performance,“Togakushi Daiko,” is played,and the Ninja fireworks are displayed in the night sky.

Nagano Olympic Commemorative Marathon
This is a special event to commemorate the Olympic Winter Games held in 1998.National and international top athletes run the course along with “citizen” runners.
Nagano Zenkoji Flower Corridor
Colorful flowers decorate the street from Nagano Station to Zenkoji Temple.
Mid-late April
Cherry Blossom Viewing
Cherry blossoms are fully bloomed throughout Nagano City.Those at Matushiro Castle Ruins and Jindai are especially beautiful.
Late April-May
Skunk Cabbages Start Blooming
In the wetlands,surrounded by native forests,are 810,000 stocks of skunk cabbages,and the experience of “woods bathing” or being refreshed by the forest,is awaiting.

The pleasant summer in Nagano City with a fresh breeze from the highlands is a time for traditional once-a-year events and other leisure activities in the heights.

Iizuna-yama Kaizan-sai,Mt. Iizuna Opening Ceremony
The ritual ceremony is held to open Mt.Iizuna for the climbing season.
July
Iris and Firefly Festival
In front of the gate of Shirahige Shrine,a National Cultural Treasure, glorious iris flowers,carefully grown by local people,are in bloom. Along the Miyazawa River in the vicinity,fireflies wildly dance,which show illusionary scenes.
August
Nagano Binzuru
The biggest dancing festival of the summer is participated in by almost all Nagano's citizens.
People cheer and dance by the bonfire as the sound of hitting rice paddles echoes throughout the city.

Kawanakajima Ancient Battlefield Festival
It is held at Hachimanpara,where the two warlords fought during the Warring States Period.

Matsushiro Sanada Jumangoku Festival
The event in the atmosphere of the Edo period reproduces the daimyo's retinue(state procession)by playing the traditional drums.

Ebisko
The fireworks festival is held every year on November 23th.The Fireworks during this season is rare in Japan.

Ashinoshiri Dousojin Festival
Every year on January 7th,people bring Matsukazari(Ornaments made of pine twigs)and make a huge face of Dōsojin to wish for good health for local people and safe trips for passers-by.They appeared in the Winter Olympics' opening ceremony in 1998.
February
Nagano Toumyou Festival
This commemorates the Winter Olympic Games hosted in Nagano prefecture in 1998.Zenkoji Temple is lit with five colored “lights of peace”
